Electrodiagnostic Studies

Electrodiagnostic studies are helpful in the evaluation of weakness, numbness, pain, and symptoms such as fatigue, cramps, and abnormal sensation. They are an extension of the physical examination. The two main procedures used to study nerves and muscles are the needle electromyographic (EMG) examination and nerve conduction studies (NCS). The physician who performs electrodiagnostic studies has had additional specialized training.

EMG

During an EMG, the physician inserts a fine needle into selected muscles to record the electrical activity. Needle insertion may cause temporary mild discomfort. No shocks are given. The needles are discarded after use to prevent the transmission of AIDS, hepatitis, and other infections.

NCS

For this study, the physician tapes small metal electrodes on the skin and applies a brief electric stimulus to one portion of a nerve. Nerve stimulation will cause a tingling sensation.
